Say hello to UK Calling, the new platform by Festival SOS 4.8 to discover the best emerging British banda.
- The platform is housed on the SOS 4.8 Facebook page and is supported by the British Council.
- Virginia Díaz, Julio Ródenas and Nicolas Jackson, presenters on Radio 3 & Radio 3 Extra, are in charge of suggesting the bands.
- A total of 4 bands – the ones best received on Facebook – will be selected to play at the next edition of SOS 4.8.
The Festival SOS 4.8, held at the Recinto Ferial La Fica in Murcia on 6 & 7 May, is launching a new initiative in collaboration with the British Council and three popular presenters on Spain’s national station Radio 3: Virginia Díaz (180 grados), Julio Ródenas (Turbo 3) and Nicolas Jackson (The Selector). Our aim is to bring the best emerging British bands to Spanish audiences.
The British music scene is full of great new bands but it often takes a long time for them to reach Spain (if they ever do). These emerging artists may well prove to be the global starts yet for now they have to cope with hours on the road, small concerts at tiny venues, endless hours of rehearsals in the suburbs of London, Manchester, Leeds or Warrington (the home town of the sorely missed Viola Beach). That’s where UK Calling comes in, as a way of recognizing this emerging talent and introducing it to Spanish audiences, before they go on to become international stars.
UK Calling is supported by the Radio 3 presenters most connected to the emerging music scene in the UK (Virginia, Julio and Nicolas), as well as by the British Council, which promotes UK culture and cultural relations between the UK and Spain.
How does UK Calling work?
Every Tuesday over the next 5 weeks, our 3 radio presenters will propose 2 emerging bands each on the Facebook page of the Festival.
At the end of the process, a total of 30 bands will have been presented to the Festival audience. Of these, the 10 artists who have attracted the most positive feedback will be considered finalists. Out of these 10 bands, a jury of experts made up of the Festival, the British Council and our three Radio 3 presenters will select the 4 bands to play at SOS 4.8 2016.
Audience participation is key in selecting the bands.
In addition, we’re offering a prize: the best commentary posted about the bands will win to 2 VIP tickets for SOS 4.8 2016. The winning commentary must be: brief, imaginative and positive about the band.
